International Credit Union Day has been celebrated worldwide on the third Tuesday of October since 1948. Credit unions were started by German farmers as an authentic, trustworthy way to combat loan sharks. Edward Filene worked to bring cooperative banking to America, and in 1909, the Massachusetts Credit Union Act was passed. Today, credit unions continue to grow in popularity and in 2012, reached $1 trillion in assets. International Credit Union Day celebrates the progress credit unions have made in serving member groups across the world. We're giving away $500 to celebrate!
